Our Tasks & Purpose
The overall function of the Edmonton Aboriginal Urban Affairs Committee is to act as a catalyst to promote the awareness and development of all Aboriginal people in the City of Edmonton. We are committed to working with other individuals, groups, agencies, and levels of government who are also addressing the urban issues and concerns of Aboriginal people living in the City of Edmonton. We are committed to the promotion of urban Aboriginal citizens, agencies, organizations, businesses, and Aboriginal civic involvement and participation. We are committed to advocate on behalf of urban Aboriginal people, and liaise with the Mayor and City Councillors through meetings, reports, and other projects and events throughout the year. We are committed to the awareness and communication of the issues which affect all the City’s Aboriginal peoples. Members of the Committee are selected annually based on merit and commitment to the Aboriginal community without consideration of tribal original or membership in any specific group. Our support services are provided by the City of Edmonton, Community Services Department.

Background & History
Aboriginal people and the City of Edmonton have had a long-standing relationship dating back to the fur trade in the Edmonton area. Increases in the City of Edmonton’s urban Aboriginal population over the past few decades have called for initiatives to acknowledge the concerns of all urban Aboriginal Edmontonians. To that end, the City of Edmonton, in cooperation and partnership with the urban Aboriginal community, formed the Edmonton Aboriginal Urban Affairs Committee in 1994.
